4 reasons to visit subway in St. Petersburg
Do you think that a metro is just a place about trains and escalators, pickpockets and crowds of people? All these are not about the subway in Saint Petersburg. Books are dedicated to this metro, its stations are called works of art, and many of people puzzle over its riddles. Metro is a must-see place in Petersburg. It's full of architectural masterpieces, legends and real stories, historical events and Russian's pride for sure. Going down you will feel the soul of the city and touch the great heritage.
So why should you visit the metro?
In order to travel in a time machine
Each station is a piece of the history of St. Petersburg and Russia. There you will find out the facts about the October revolution, the Stalin regime, the achievements of writers and scientists, hard work of the Soviet people and even find a place where Stalin hiding today. All these events are commemorated in sculpture.

The artwork on the walls of the metro is just amazing. Some stations are purely art-pieces: marble, bronze, crystal chandeliers.
In order to visit the deepest subway in the world
It is actually unbelievable how deep the metro is. More than 50 of its stations are located at a depth exceeding 30 meters.

"Admiralteyskaya" is by far the deepest metro station in Russia if you count from sea level. Exactly 86 meters. In order to go down to the platform, passengers on the first escalator spend about three minutes and another minute on the second escalator which is an underground one. You don't believe that it will ever end.

But the Admiralteyskaya platform is not yet the deepest part of the St. Petersburg metro. If you go in the direction of "Sportivnaya", then somewhere in the middle of the path you will find yourself at the depth of more than 100 meters. It's like the height of St. Isaac's Cathedral, just down.
In order to know about the horizontal lifts
Some stations have horizontal elevators. Sliding doors block the exits to the tunnels in the subway. A special device synchronizes the opening of doors in the cars of the train and at the station when the train arrives at the metro station. Why was it made: for safety or because of the low cost? And why are stations of this type no longer being built? In total, there are 10 horizontal elevator stations in the St. Petersburg metro.
In order to see the castle and the sky under the ground
"The Guardian" published the rating of 12 impressive metro stations from all over the world.

And "Avtovo" is one of them. The ceiling of the station is supported by 46 columns, 16 of which are lined with glass, and the rest - with marble. If you wonder why the station is called

"crystal palace", you should join our excursion and see this masterpiece.

The design of the "Kirovsky Zavod" station is dedicated to the development of industry in the country. The ceiling of the underground hall is supported by 62 columns. But if you look up, it seems that it is the open sky above the head, but not a ceiling.

This place is worth visiting for every guest of St. Petersburg. Our nice and professional guide will help you find the secret messages of architects and few entrances to the bomb shelters. You will also hear interesting facts from the recently declassified archives during the tour.

Story of construction
During the tour you will learn about the construction of St Petersburg underground, the stages of its opening and will understand why it is a live-museum rather than just a transportation system.
Admiralteyskaya Station
For about 15 years it was in fact ghost-station, the trains passed it without stopping. Active work was resumed several years ago – escalators and platform were assembled. Today, after the opening, "Admiralteyskaya " has become the deepest metro station in Russia – the length of the escalators is 120 meters.
Pushkinskaya station
It was named due to the proximity of the Vitebsky station (ex. Tsarskoye Selo), that was connecting St. Petersburg with city of Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo), where the famous poet Aleksandr Pushkin lived and studied in the Lyceum from 1811 to 1817. Originally the clearance of a station was planned to be devoted to the construction of the Tsarskoye Selo Railway, the first in Russia In the final project the subject changed — the station became entirely devoted to the great Russian poet, and now it is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the Petersburg subway.
Avtovo station
Unbelievable subway station, mentioned in the list of regional heritage. It is famous for its columns with decorative glass, a special cut of which, thanks to the refraction of the light beam, creates an unusual glow effect of columns from inside.
Narvskaya station
The station was opened on the 15th of November 1955 as part of the initial line of the subway "Avtovo" – " Ploshad Vosstaniya." It was named due to the location in the historic district of Narva Gate. The pavilion is located on the Stachek (Strikes) Square (Narva are in the past) where the Narva Triumphal Gate stands.
